Is batch renaming possible at all? . Expecting this to be possible was the main reason for my download trial! Could not find anything about it in the 'manual’

No, it is not possible with TotalFinder.
Maybe look at this utility:

Thanks Darwin! Followed your hint and ABetterFindeRename indeed appears like the supreme renamer to me on the one hand but it also limits itself to just about that. Am going to take a shot at Cocoatechs PathFinder ( had an older version on a previous system) that seems to give me sufficient renaming support and also has a lot of other Finder enhancements.
