TotalFinder won't start after ElCap cold start

Hi

For some reason TotalFinder refuses to re start after a MacBook cold start.

It used to but now I have to click the app icon in my applications folder to restart it.

What is going on?

I am using Total Finder V1.7.10 on a early 2015 13" MacBook Pro
El Capitan is at V10.11.2 (15C50)

Please help

Please open Console.app -> All Messages.
Filter the view with “Finder” keyword.
Launch new /Applications/TotalFinder.app and observe any error messages there.

Hi Darwin, I’m not great with the console but I have filtered as you suggested and below is a copy of the console listing: I haven’t tired the last line of your suggestion because if I switch my MacBook off and restart it TotalFinder will start as normal. I have to wait until tomorrow for it not to restart. I hope it makes sense.

The console.app log seems to be ok.

Don’t you have “Disable tabs completely” feature checked in TotalFinder’s preferences?

No I haven’t selected that option

Ok, let me know if you find out more. From the log it looks like TotalFinder started normally and it has no trouble running.

Thanks, although I don’t quite know what else to do other than start it every day but if something else occurs i’ll report back here.

Strange though, it starts ok without a problem on my iMac???

Just wondering. Do you have TotalFinder.app in your Login Startup Items?

It is described here under “TotalFinder in login startup items”:
http://totalfinder.binaryage.com/installation

Yes I do, but after a cold start it has disappeared. I have to drag it back in there for it to start automatically for the rest of that working day. If I sleep the MacBook or switch it off completely it will still relaunch ok. If however I go into another day it won’t relaunch. If I check in login startup items its missing. I guess then my problem is that the TotalFinder.app won’t stay in my login items.

That is definitely the problem. Something must be messing with those items and removing them.

You could try to test it under a brand new user account. Create a new user under Preferences -> Users & Groups, login under it, install TotalFinder there (or just put TotalFinder.app into login startup items under that new user). Then try to restart your machine and log under that new user account again. See if the settings persist.

Good idea, ill have to try that that on the guest account later and test it tomorrow because of the problem mentioned earlier. If it starts ok and continues to stay in my login items - any ideas how to solve it?

You have to find the reason why the Login Startup Items list does not persist. Hard to tell. I would guess it is caused by some other software “cleaning” this list for some reason. Do you use anything like CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?

No I keep well away from those types of problems, the only thing remotely similar is that I use CleanMyDrive 2

After some pretty basic ‘fault finding’ I am pleased to report that after I removed CleanMy Drive 2 TotalFinder works perfectly on my MacBook. I think that is sorted now - its strange however that both CleanMyDrive2 and TotalFinder co-exist quite happily on my iMac???
