TotalFinder status under OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)

Well done - works well.

Just installed TotalFinder with my OSX 10.11 installation and am unable to scroll. Finder OK without TotalFinder.

Thanks

Steve

If TotalFinder ends up “dying” due to system protection, would it be possible to create a totally separate, new finder app that did the same things (and/ or more) than TotalFinder injected into Finder? Apple’s never going to give us everything you have; but you could effectively rewrite the Finder from scratch and include your own features. This happens on the Windows side of the world all the time. There are a great many File Explorer replacements. It would be nice (and worth at least the $18 registration fee) to have something like that available.

Just a thought tho…

Looks like it’s dead under today’s b2 release. I get an error that Apple Events cannot be delivered, and restarting appleeventsd does nothing.

TotalSpaces isn’t starting either. :disappointed:

We’ll have a look, but this may be, as we feared, due to system integrity protection - for reference see http://blog.binaryage.com/on-el-capitan/

El Capitan Beta 2 Problem:

Error message ‘Troubles launching TotalFinder - apple events cannot be delivered’

no option to continue anyway; followed the ‘more info’ link but did not help…

I can confirm that TotalFinder 1.7.0 no longer works under OS X 10.11 El Capitan beta 2.

TotalTerminal still works. TotalFinder does not work anymore. They both use the same injection mechanism/code. So it seems that Apple decided to disable apple-script-based injections on per-application basis or maybe depending on their location in the filesystem.

I don’t want to make a quick conclusions. But at this point I think Apple’s intention is clear and even if we found a way around it, they would block the particular method in the next release.

Total Finder is working just fine for me under El Capitan Beta 2 build 15A204h using v1.7.0 of Total Finder.

@darwin Have you guys considered making a complete finder replacement? Something like Path Finder, but with the features and look of TotalFinder. If you do end up making something like that to work around the issues in 10.11, I would definitely buy a copy, even if it costs more than TotalFinder currently does. Maybe you could call it TotalFinder Pro

If you do end up making something like that, you might consider opening up pre-orders to support development while you work on it. I would definitely be one of the first people to pre-order it, even though I’m on 10.10.3 and can still use the original TotalFinder.

While I’m sure it would be a lot of work to turn TotalFinder into a complete finder replacement, I think it would open up a ton of possibilities that can only be done with complete control over the app. One of the features you might be able to add would be faster file copying, like TeraCopy on Windows but built-in. Maybe it would also make it possible to get rid of that annoying issue I keep getting where sometimes TotalFinder restores the session with every tab going all the way back to the root on the left (in column mode) instead of whatever sidebar item I started with.

Anyway, if you make a complete finder replacement, I would definitely support it.

totalfinder seems to work fine on beta 2 after setting rootless again and reboot

sudo nvram boot-args="rootless=0"
reboot

must have gotten lost installing the beta 2 update…

thanks for the fast beta :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The fix above also works for me on beta 2. Thanks for posting it!

After setting rootless and rebooting TotalFinder now works for me on beta2…
so much better/easier/intuitive than Path Finder!
cheers
PS please don’t give up!

Yes, the fix works fine for beta2…and not only for TotalFinder…

It says here that there might be an attempt to replace the functionality, but the main message seems to indicate that there won’t be. I’m not sure which it is (I suspect the latter), so I’ll just add a vote to work on it. For me, folders on top is worth the price of admission; it is the only real deal-breaker for me. (I can live without colored labels and colored sidebar and I don’t use Visor). I would prefer that dual mode mirror the sidebar, but I think I could even live without that.

Please don’t give up on TotalFinder!

Setting the rootless does make it work! BRAVO!

sudo nvram boot-args="rootless=0"

I agree with @vr8ce - I can live without a lot here, but I really need Folders On Top. I also don’t use colored labels or Visor. I WOULD pay extra for that and hope that you keep working on this. While I am an old Windows veteran, I’ve been a Mac for nearly 10 years but use Windows at work. Folders on top makes navigating and browsing my drives a lot easier.

Thanks for all your hard work. Everything that you and your team do is greatly appreciated.

Another vote for a standalone app or whatever you can do… I made the jump to Mac about six months ago and finder has been sh***ing me to tears since day one, I’m ten days into my TotalFinder trial and it’s just about changed my life. I downloaded it knowing it’s stopped working on 10.11 but I can’t bring myself to shell out for it if it won’t work in a couple of months… I’d rather go back to the nightmare that is Finder than get used to having something that works only to have it taken away from me :frowning:

The only functions I use are Folders On Top and Column Auto-Width… would happily pay for just those two things.

Subscribed to keep an eye on progress

Cheers

Actually can anyone running El Capitan tell me a bit about the implications of disabling SIP either through recovery or through the rootless command above? Has it significantly hurt your install in any way (e.g. lost functionality) or has it solely disabled the protection and essentially given you an update to El Capitan but with the security level of Yosemite?

I did a bit of reading on SIP and according to several sources it’s literally there so that uneducated users don’t just bang in their password and give root access to any old thing that pops up. I’m new-ish to mac but not at all new to security on Linux-based machines so I’m comfortable that I can decide when to supply my password, I also have a solid backup regime in case of any issues…

So if disabling SIP is all it takes to keep TotalFinder working then I’d be happy to do that, as long as it doesn’t cause any issues other than reverting me to Yosemite-level security…

Thanks

Running the rootless=0 bootarg essentially brings you to OS X 10.9 level of security. If you’re an intelligent and scrutinous user, you shouldn’t have an issue running the command safely.

I am also running 1.7.0 without issues rootless=0
