I’m not sure if this has been shared yet, apologies if so.
For me, the one thing about TotalSpaces that I care the most about is the ability to remove the animation switching spaces, so that it’s instant.
Well, this dude nailed it! It’s not a quick & easy install, but I finished building and setting it up on my machine and it works perfectly, switching spaces is now instant with no animation.
SpaceJump!! Finally I found something that at least NAMES your spaces. Lots of features. Caveat: Installed it 5 minutes ago, so…
Rejoice! Finally I can rip off the stickers I have taped to the top of my screen, my best solution so far after TotalSpaces died.
I hate their introductory setup design (dark text on dark background), and their web page shifts between colors all the time. Fortunately their settings window is readable.
I’ve been using GridLion for a few weeks and it’s really great. Just added the ability to drag windows (grab window and use a hotkey to switch to another desktop = take window to new desktop). Dev’s been super responsive and has been releasing features regularly.
Out of frustration with the TotalSpaces 2.0/3.0 project being discontinued, I started working with Anthropic on a completely new version, inspired by years of using Exposé & Spaces before Apple introduced Mission Control - and, of course, by TotalSpaces itself.
I’m planning to launch the project in alpha and open it up for public testing next week. Would anyone else be interested in a new “TotalSpaces,” which I’m now calling retro⊞spaces?
So I’ve prepared a pretty provisional website, I apologize in advance for the rough edges, but we’ve only been working on it for about 5 days. If anyone’s interested in testing the app, the website is here: https://retrospaces.cz
I’m really looking forward to this and appreciate your work here!
QQ: Should we be using that fork for installing yabai? I think the newer versions would be under asmvik (rather than koekeishiya). Am I reading that all correctly? I’d be new to installing either, so I just wanted to make sure before proceeding.
Retrospaces is tested with koekeishiya, but I will try a few tests with the original. BTW, yabai is just a temporary solution, I hope
BTW It’s the same project - koekeishiya has since renamed his GitHub account to asmvik. github.com/koekeishiya/yabai now redirects to github.com/asmvik/yabai.
I followed the instructions to install yabai via koekeishiya and homrebrew installed yabai 7.1.25. I may be reading it wrong, but is it possible this version was taken automatically from the yabai asmvik/homebrew-formulae repository? If so, a little CLI review hints that it can move windows between Spaces without disabling SIP. If so, does retrospaces still require disabling SIP?
I may be way out of my league here, so I’ll be over here patiently waiting for your review.
The yabai version 7.1.25 is correct and yes it’s same project/code as asmvik.
Disabling SIP is important for two functions: adding and removing desktops - that could theoretically be handled differently (the user could set everything up in advance in macOS via Mission Control) - but the key requirement is switching from one desktop to another, which relies on Dock injection
I’ll add a table to the website showing which features retrospaces supports and why each prerequisite is needed. I hope that over time I’ll be able to replace some of these dependencies so that, for example, not all of them will be necessary, but time will tell - and it will also depend on whether there is enough interest in retrospaces
I have installed retrospaces and am impressed with what you’ve created! I couldn’t get my old keyboard combo for showing the Overview grid to work, but the suggested one you created was fine and was easy to fully configure with BetterTouchTool so I’m up and running.
Being able to quickly switch desktops, move windows between desktops on the Overview grid, and have my old setup running in record time is wonderful. When you make it so I can press [spacebar] in the Overview grid to spread out all the windows on each desktop, I think I’ll have pretty much everything I wanted back from TotalSpaces.
I’m really excited about this and am looking forward to your continued development. Excellent job so far!!
Version 0.1.2 is still very much a prototype and proof of concept, so there’s a lot more I’d like to add over time. Thanks for testing it and sharing your feedback - it really helps!
1. You can set the shortcut for Grid Overview to whatever works best for you. That said, I think there might be a small bug here, so I need to do some more testing. Please send me the key combo you’re using and I’ll try it on my side too.
BTW, if some keyboard shortcuts or hot corners don’t work, it might be because the same shortcut is already being used by another service in the system. I’m thinking about adding a small diagnostic tool that could check for duplicate shortcuts or conflicts automatically. I think that could be pretty useful.
2. And if you have any ideas, suggestions, or things you’d like to see in future versions, please share them! I still have a lot of places to polish and my TODO list is already pretty long, but feedback from people actually using the app is always welcome
3. I’m also preparing a small discussion forum over at the Forum · retro⊞spaces . The idea is to gradually move feedback, ideas, bug reports, updates, and other information there so everything is easier to find and discuss.
Thanks again for trying it out and helping me improve
I’ve been keeping up with the new versions. Version 0.3.0 just implemented a nice improvement for me. The grid view overlapping windows fix makes that much more useable. Excellent work!
I’m assuming you’ll eventually get around to implementing the option to press space (or some keyboard combo) while in grid view to spread out and see all windows (like the default when invoking Mission Control). That would make window management so much easier for me.
I am enjoying watching this project as it continues maturing.
