I looked in the options and found nothing that allowed me to display the name I gave my desktop instead of just seeing the number.

Hi,
The menu bar icon only displays the number. It’s not planned to make it display the name at the moment. (Given that the name is already shown on the overview grid, on the space change notification and also in the menu.)
