Stuck trying to disable SIP

So I did the first steps just fine, in putting myself into reduce security mode. Now, when I did the csrutil disable in the terminal in recovery mode, it tells me the OS environment does not allow changing security configuration options. Ensure that the system was booted into recovery OS via the standard user action.

Suggestions?

I don’t know if I can give you the definitive answer. I have been struggling with getting TotalFinder to work on a fresh install of Sequoia (after a disastrous experience with an earlier beta of Tahoe).

I now have TotalFinder working on Sequoia. I just upgraded to Beta 5 of Tahoe and it is working perfectly.

I had to disable SIP and do a reduced security via Startup Utilities.

I am typing out instructions to keep for future use. This is what I have so far. I would suggest rebooting your Mac and trying again…

  1. Reboot in Recovery Mode by holding down power button

  2. Once in Recovery Mode, Bring up Terminal (under Utilities). Type this command:

csrutil disable

This disables SIP

  1. Not certain if you need to restart your Mac at this point before moving on to the next step, but I restarted my Mac to accept the changes.

  2. Repeat Step 1. This time, once in recovery, go to Utilities and STARTUP SECURITY and select PERMISSIVE. Also check the two sub options which concern kernels.

  3. Restart your Mac. Launch TotalFinder. It may have further instructions about having to disable something else with a link to this site for further instructions.

The only issue I see you having, unless you have TotalFinder working on another Mac, is not being able to access the preference pane in Finder once you have done all that. I ended up having to copy and paste .plist files from another Mac TotalFinder was working on, over to this new install in order for it to work.

Unfortunately, installing TotalFinder has become a huge pain in the ass. I only use it for its visor feature which I find to be priceless. It’s the most valuable feature in daily usage. I love being able to hit the option key twice to have finder roll up and down like a drawer. I don’t use the other features. So, as much of a hassle it is to get it initially working, I don’t mind the effort.
