I copied the plist file from Sonoma and replaced it in Sequoia and Visor works
Thanks for this! I was able to turn on auto column width and colored labels using this method.
Copying the Plist works for a while. On my M1 MB Pro it seems to be ok. But on my I5 iMac it behaves very strange: When opening new tabs or windows it sometimes looses other tabs content and displays them in pure white (look in the background of the attached image). Opening a new windows most of the times closes the current one. Very strange behaviours.
Can someone help?
Will there still be any support on this app or are we lost?
I deleted all " com.binaryage.totalfinder " related files in
~/Library/Preferences/ folder and restated the system.
Now TotalFinder works again under Sequoia 15.1
Try the same
So it works better on 15.1 than on 15.0.x ?
I upgraded from Sonoma (where it worked fine) to Sequoia 15.0. csrutil is still disabled. At first the colored folder labels still worked, but somehow now it doesn’t work properly anymore in all and I can’t get to the settings of TotalFinder although it is shown active in the apple bar. You only get the window, but the settings are not going to be opened. Do I have to delete everything from the preferences or should I try to install TotalFinder again?
Perhaps someone here could make their working plist files available?
I had no luck deleting these files on my iMac (I5). No settings possible, very strange behaviour (see me previous post).
I have it working on a MB Pro M1. If you have a similar machine, I’d like to send you my working file.
After upgrading to 15.1 on both machines I have exactly the same condition as with 15.0.1:
- iMac (I5) shows strange behaviours like opening a new window and closing an old one when I double click on a folder or drive on the desktop. Sometimes windows or tabs become empty. Copying plist from MB to iMac or deleting them shows no influence (only the settings get lost).
- MB Pro M1 seems to work without problems.
Settings cannot be opened on any of the two computers.
I’m not sure if there are some new features in XtraFinder (XtraFinder add Tabs, Dual Panel, and numerous features to Mac's native Finder) - I’ve not really been interested up to now as I’ve been running Ventura till a couple of months ago and only upgraded to Sonoma. Now I’m looking at Sequoia and have a virtual test machine set up in Parallels - I’ve found that the latest version of XtraFinder (1.9) seems to do everything I love TotalFinder for - easy access to dual pane with seperate sidebars, coloured icons, and a ‘Hot Window’ - a Visor replacement. For $4.99 it’s cheap enough to test against TF to see if it meets your needs…
Kind of in the same boat, other than that I’m still on Ventura. But I was looking around for alternatives and saw that XtraFinder supports Sonoma and Sequoia. However, I don’t have any way of testing without upgrading to Sequoia.
Would be very interesting to hear your thoughts if you do decide to run the test.
Also, XtraFinder is free (with full functionality), you are even encouraged to test before purchasing.
Free, yes, but with a significantly delayed start until you register - and at only $4.99 it’s pretty great value. I’ve been diving deeper into it and doing side by side comparisons with TF and (for me - I can’t stress that enough - others may find it lacking in some respect) I can’t find any feature that’s missing. There’s also a lot more power under the hood than TF with features you can add to the Finder menu or as window icons (like new file creation based on templates, ‘collapse all’ in the folder heirarchy or ‘select’ based on search criteria - it also has workspaces which I will probably start using). I’ve also been looking at QSpace Pro (QSpace - A Better Finder) but that runs as a seperate app - it’s very powerful but maybe a bit much for my needs. With XtraFinder I feel like I can now commit to upgrading MacOS and still have the Finder that suits my workflow. I’d say it’s definitely worth a try as a decent alternative…
It looks like this started happening for me later in Sonoma’s lifecycle, maybe around 14.6 or so.
I’ve actually used XtraFinder and TotalFinder on and off over the years. I like that XtraFinder only shows one sidebar in dual panel mode. Overall, TotalFinder was working better in general, so I usually went with that, but I wasn’t aware that XtraFinder updated for Sonoma and Sequoia last month. I’ll have to give that a test. Maybe my previous license / registration will still work, so I don’t have deal with the start up delay.
I’ll report back after some testing.
Ok, just some quick comparisons between TotalFinder and XtraFinder:
XtraFinder requires some terminal commands and a reboot to get up and running, but they’re really straightforward, any instructions are in the Instruction.rtf file. No one should really have any problems getting it installed. The alias to the finder plugin location wasn’t working for me, but I easily navigated to the location manually.
It took my decades old registration, which was cool. If I continue to use this, they continue to support feature versions of macOS, I’ll probably register again to thank them for the support.
Even though there’s an option, I can’t hide the menu bar item. I’ll reach out to the developer about it.
The tabs look a little wonky, like someone cut them out with scissors, HOWEVER, I like how they force the back-and-forth arrow over to the right, I always thought the arrow placement looked awkward when Apple redesigned the Finder in macOS 11.
I think my biggest issue is the gray highlights are incredibly hard to read. There’s a manual setting where you can go in and change how dark and saturated the labels are, but this is as far as the gray will go. Other colors look great, and actually an improvement over both the Finder’s and TotalFinder’s settings. I’ll reach out to the developer about this as well.
This isn’t necessarily a dealbreaker, but my custom Finder icon disappears when I am in XtraFinder. It works correctly in TotalFinder. I know Apple killed the ability to change system icons (or at least made it incredibly difficult) starting around macOS 14.2 or so, so I’m not even sure how my custom icon has persisted all the way past 14.2.
Overall, TotalFinder still works for me, but I have a feeling the long-term solution will be to move to XtraFinder. I really hope TotalFinder makes a comeback, maybe the developer will get interested in it again, or maybe they’ll allow someone to take over development, but for now I would suggest that everybody go and try XtraFinder, and if it works for them, purchase a license to support the developer. If they get a sudden flood of registration, they will be motivated to continue to support the product.
Did you figure out the dual sidebars issue? It was one of the first things I noticed in XtraFinder which makes it a more usable solution for me compared to some others (like Forklift). It’s here for anyone who’s interested -
You can also double click on the heading of second tab to create a dual panel - again, one of the killer features of TF.
I currently have mine setup with the single side bar in them middle. I actually like that over TotalFinder.
Thanks to all for the helpful comments. Could someone confirm whether or not XtraFinder works with IconChamp on M1 machines? Thank you.
IconChamp doesn’t work properly with starting in macOS Sonoma (maybe Ventura), and is essentially broken after in 14.2+. It doesn’t matter if you’re using TotalFinder or XtraFinder.
If you’ mean the Finder icon specifically, I’m running 14.7, and TotalFinder is still honoring my custom icon that I set back in 14,0, whereas XtraFinder is not.I reached out to the XtraFinder developer on Nov 8th, and haven’t gotten a reply.
Thanks, Rick_Karrer.
So, it appears there are more recent, “unofficial” versions of IconChamp which are at least partially compatible with Sequoia. Licensing is the same though. On my machine (i7 Mini), IconChamp.1.3.7 does not work but freezes. IconChamp.1.4 sort of works but crashes after I click “Apply”. The changes take place after reboot but do not always “stick” so they may have to be executed several times which is time-consuming. It seems all system dock apps can be modified but not all system folders, it is unpredictable. It mostly works though but be prepared for IconChamp crashing a lot.
Thank you so much for not only doing the testing, but taking the time to report back to the rest of us. I have a few questions…
Does the colorful sidebar work in XtraFinder now?
Do you have both TotalFinder and XtraFinder running at the same time on the same computer or do they conflict?
And lastly…have you had a response from the developer…when I tried to contact him a few times in 2019 after purchasing XtraFinder, I never heard back.
