My computer was “fixed” by Apple, which installed Sonoma over my old Catalina. Now TotalSpaces2 will run, but cannot load a grid. My work has ground to a halt. I use 16 desktops at all times. It complains that it cannot manage the Dock, but I have allowed that, and it still cannot create a grid.
TotalSpaces2 will not run past Monterey if I recall.
TotalSpaces3 seems to work on Ventura onwards but is not as stable and the product is no longer receiving any updates.
TotalSpaces2 does not run on Monterey. I was recently forced to upgrade to Monterey due to an MS Teams requirement and TS2 broke… I’ve been using SpaceCapsule as opposed to TS3 but it’s not great.
Years of using TS2 and I was happy with it and now my desktop experience is pretty miserable.
@Matthew_Knepley and @nambrosch you need to get TotalSpaces 3, check this thread: for a free coupon code to get a license: Where to by a license for Total Spaces 3?
Download the latest TotalSpaces3 version here: https://downloads.binaryage.com/TotalSpaces3-0.9.125.dmg
It’s not as good as TotalSpaces2. It feels half-finished, the lead dev called it an alpha version. But it’s the best we’re going to get, probably. You can pair it with BetterTouchTool to squeeze a bit more functionality out.
Edit: Someone said they’ve tried using Space Capsule (https://spacecapsule.app/) which has this FAQ:
"AQ
Does Space Capsule require special privileges to work?
No special privileges are required, but if you want to use the trackpad gesture to show the grid, the app does need accessibility privileges to receive trackpad input. Space Capsule only uses this privilege to process gesture input and nothing else, and does not retain or transmit any user data.
Why do I need to visit a Space before Space Capsule knows about it?
There is no publicly supported way for third party developers to manipulate or know about Spaces in macOS.
Space Capsule can uniquely identify and return to a Space that you're on, though, without having to use any private frameworks or unsupported macOS functionality.
Why can’t I remove a Space from within Space Capsule?
This is another limitation of not being able to manipulate Spaces as a third party developer in macOS.
Can I use Space Capsule to move windows from one Space to another?
Unfortunately not. This is another feature that is not publicly supported in macOS for third party developers.

Well that’s awful, it explains some of the bugs I’ve seen with TotalSpaces3 that really hobble its functionality! To this I must say, fuck Apple. TotalSpaces only had to exist in the first place because Apple broke Spaces, and it looks like eventually Apple decided to break the ability for anyone to even fix what Apple broke. I would stay on version of MacOS that supports TotalSpaces2 forever if it weren’t for security updates forcing me to “upgrade” to an objectively worse OS with an objectively worse UI.
